Born Without Gender

Today on Dr. Oz Betsy talked with Dr. Oz about when her babies were born. Throughout her pregnancy she thought she was having twin girls, soon to be named Abby and Emma. As the story goes on, Betsy named one baby Abby, and the other little girl that she was to name Emma was born with a condition call Ambiguous Genitalia (born both male and female). She named her other baby Nathaniel.

For one in 2000 babies born each year, are born with this condition (neither exclusively male or female). It all happens at the moment of conception, that split second when sperm meets egg, our gender is decided. The sperm and egg each carry a genetic structure, called the chromosome that determines our sex. Two X chromosomes make a girl, and X and a Y make a boy. Sometimes nature misfires and an extra chromosome makes it way into the mix, or sometimes chromosomes trigger hormones that blur the line between male and female. The result — undefined gender, where female reproductive organs can develop inside boys, and male reproductive organs can develop inside girls. This condition is unusual but far from rare, one child out of 1500 is born without a clear gender.

What Happens To A Child Born Intersex

In most cases Doctors determine the newborns gender and assigned surgeries are performed on otherwise healthy babies. The question Dr. Oz put out there is “What would you do”.

Betsy tells her story about the day Nathaniel was born — To look on the outside you can’t really tell that he is a boy or a girl. That first day she says she was in a haze, until the moment she held him and realized this is my baby and I love him like all my others. Betsy contacted Dr. Oz so he he could tell the world that her sons condition is more common than people think.

The chromosome tests concluded that he had 46 XY male chromosomes. A doctor said they could raise the child as a girl if they so chose to, but they wanted to take a conservative approach and waited to see how he felt about himself, how he presented himself, and time to make the decision. Betsy said that it is important for people to know that kids like this are normal. She worries about how he’s going to handle things, and what he’s going to think of himself. Right now she said Nathaniel thinks he’s awesome!

Betsy and Dr. Oz is joined by Dr. Tiger Howard Devore, who also has lived his life with this same condition, who was subjected to early surgery against his will, and commended Betsy for taking the time on making the decision concerning Nathaniel’s gender, and allowing the child to make the decision later in life.

Sugar addict Charmelle — Break Your Sugar Addiction

28 days ago Dr. Oz met Charmelle, a sugar addict, who said her love of the sweet stuff was destroying her, and her children’s health. Dr. oz put her on a 28 day sugar detox, asking her to cut out all the sugar.

Sugar addict Charmelle Breaking The Sugar Addiction 28 days Later

28 days later Charmelle is back, and says she feels amazing, and she has energy that she’s never had before. Dr. Oz told her they went to the green room and took her purse. Charmelle was quick to say there is no sugar in there. She said one day she was walking, and she had a cup in her hand — a lady asked her “is that a sugary drink”. People she didn’t even know were making sure she was being accountable.

Dr. Oz had sent her on her way with a Sony Cam to record her journey.

Charmelle’s son was suffering from the same kind of problems Charmelle was. He didn’t want to do the detox with his mom, she said he went into it kicking and screaming, and temper tantrums. Charmelle lost 6 pounds, and she lost 3 inches of her waist. Her sugar intake used to be 84 tablespoons of sugar a day, now it is 10 tablespoons a day.

Charmelle said it was hard, but it is worth it. She ate breakfast everyday, she is now obsessed with food labels, eating fresh herbs, because prepackaged products have so much sugar in them, let alone sodium. During snack times she eats nuts, things that are just fresh and nothing else. This has become a lifestyle change for her and her family now.

Dr. Jeanine Downie joined Dr. Oz today to talk about 3 simple procedure’s that can be done in the amount of time it takes to eat your lunch. The first one she did was for spider veins. The second lady she removed a fair size mole on the jaw line, and the third lady had an issue with her hands. Caryn wanted it so you wouldn’t notice the veins and tendons so much on the top of her hands, and Dr. Jeanine Downie took care of that also.
