Dr oz says with restless leg syndrome people classically get irritation at the back of their calf, and when you move your leg it gets better. The discomfort can start in your ankle, it can start in your hip, it can be anywhere including your body trunk, or your arms. People describe it with multiple words such as creeping, crawling, tingling, pulling, itching, gnawing and aching, and the only way they get relief is by walking around.

1. Prescription Drugs — Sometimes drugs can be the cause such antidepressants, antihistamines, and sleep medications may cause RLS. But there are also new pharmaceutical drugs out there to help.

2. Iron deficiency — RLS is common in people with iron deficiency, so if your iron levels are low such as anemia.

If your symptoms are mild, self-help may be sufficient treatment. If your Restless Legs Syndrome is caused by an underlying condition, treatment of the underlying condition often cures the RLS.

Treatment For RLS

Medications used to treat restless leg syndrome include carbidopa-levodopa, opioids (such as propoxyphene) or tramadol (Ultram) for intermittent symptoms, carbamazepine, clonazepam, diazepam, triazolam, temazepam, baclofen, bromocriptine, and clonidine. Also, recently, gabapentin (Neurontin) has been found helpful. The FDA has now approved ropinirole (Requip) and pramipexole (Mirapex) for the treatment of restless leg syndrome. Other treatments that have been helpful for some patients include avoiding caffeine, warm/cold baths, electric nerve stimulation, oral magnesium, and acupuncture.
