DR. OZ MEDICAL EXCLUSIVE: INSIDE THE O.R. OF THE NATION’S FIRST MALE FACE TRANSPLANT PATIENT

Today on Dr. Oz we get to experience the life changing experience of Jim Maki, The Nations First Male Face Transplant. Jim is reunited with the woman who donated her husbands face to him. Some of the images in the video are a little graphic, and heart breaking as well, as Jim tells his story of the life of being shut in and alone living with the tragedy that changed his life.

The First Male Face Transplant On Dr. Oz is a very touching story first hand from the first male face transplant recipient in the nation. Jim says even though he has had the surgery people still stare and make remarks.

Jim was severely injured in a fall and lost most of the tissue and bone of his mid face. He lost his nose, upper lip, and most of his cheeks which caused a very deep and profound deformity. He couldn’t eat, speak, or have any facial expression, nor could he breathe normally.

Face Transplant Surgery

The man who had the first face transplant; This transformation begins at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and led by Dr Bohdan Pomahac.

The story starts 4 years ago when 55 year old Vietnam Vet Jim Maki suffered a horrible accident in the Boston Subway Station. He fell on the electrified rail, and burning his face and right arm severely. Jim pretty much lost his whole face, and was a miracle he survived at all.

Jim spent 3 months in the hospital, and 2 years in a rehab facility. He was watching t.v. one day and saw Dr Bohdan Pomahac talking about a face transplant, and wished that he was a candidate for that — little did he know that Dr Pomahac already had him in mind.

Susan Helfgot is reunited with Jim Maki and tells her story about her husband’s health history with heart problems, and how her husband recieved a heart transplant and the end results of joseph Helfgot’s life — How it came to be that Jim received Joseph Helfgots face. Joseph Helfgot’s eyes and heart were donated to other recipients, and his kidneys and pancreas were donated for research.
