What is Ginkgo?

Today, Ginkgo biloba is one of the top-selling herbs in the United States. Leaves from the Ginkgo biloba tree have been a common treatment in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. In the U.S., many take ginkgo supplements in the belief that they will improve memory and sharpen thinking.

Other names for ginkgo include Maidenhair tree, Kew tree, and Japanese silver apricot. In traditional Chinese medicine, the seeds of the ginkgo tree are used. The trees leaves have been used more and more in the expanding market for the use of alternative medicines. In the past the seeds were used more often as a source of extract for the remedy.

There have been recent studies on the controversy of Ginkgo and cancer risks, but other studies have shown the benefits of Ginkgo. It has been around for thousands of years, it’s natural and I think I will stick with the ancients swear by.

Why Do People Use Ginkgo?

Many doctors have agreed that Ginkgo is a useful treatment for certain symptoms and conditions, especially in older people. Some doctors have accepted that for the elderly this herbal treatment is very useful and can make a real difference to their lives.

Insufficient blood flow, low circulation, mental fuzziness, symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss, vertigo, tinnitus or ringing in ears.

Ginkgo biloba extracts are considered to be safe and free of side effects. Consistent large doses may lead to diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, which can be remedied by decreasing the amount consumed.

I am a big fan of Dr. Andrew Weil and he recommends to look for ginkgo products with 24.0% standardization of ginkgolides. (Could also be listed as ginkgo flavonoids or flavone glycosides.)

There is no real recommended dosage for Ginkgo, Dr. Weil recommends this ginkgo dosage: Take 120 milligrams a day in divided doses with food. Give it a two-month trial.

Others have recommended this dosage:

  • The recommended daily dose of Ginkgo biloba is a total of 120 to 240 milligrams divided into two to three doses.
  • The time limitations for using Ginkgo biloba correspond to the condition:
  • Gingko should be used for at least 8 weeks if treating impaired memory. Gingko may be used for more than 3 months if there is evidence of continued effectiveness.
  • For disorders of blood vessels in the general circulatory system, the recommended use of ginkgo is at least 6 weeks.
  • For vertigo or tinnitus, use should be limited to 6 to 8 weeks, unless there is evidence of continued effectiveness.

Ginkgo Side Effects

Ginkgo Drug Interactions
Do not use Ginkgo biloba with Coumadin or other blood-thinning drugs except under medical supervision: Gingko increases the effect of these medications.
