Dr Oz Five Foods That Starve Cancer

Anti-Angiogenesis – The 5 Foods That Fight Cancer – What You Can Eat to Defeat Cancer

William W. Li, MD President, The Angiogenesis Foundation talked about the important new research that is showing that how you select, prepare and consume foods can be a powerful weapon for preventing cancer with Dr Oz Five Foods That Starve Cancer segment.

Anti-angiogenesis, the “starving’ of deadly cancer cells, is a groundbreaking cancer-fighting strategy. Angiogenesis is the body’s way of creating new blood vessels. Cancer cells highjack this process, creating an uninterrupted flow of blood that stimulates growth. Eating the right foods in the right way can control this process and cut off the blood supply that fuels ravenous cancer cells. Learn more about anti-angiogenesis and read on to find out which 5 superfoods starve cancer.

Anti-angiogenesis, the starving of cancers by cutting off its blood supply, now a proven cancer-fighting strategy in cancer clinics supported by a growing body of scientific research, is migrating to the grocery store and farmer’s market.

Many healthy foods contain bioactive compounds – specific substances that affect the body in certain ways, such as lowering blood pressure or cholesterol, or mopping up cancer-promoting free oxygen radicals, or inhibiting angiogenesis. In addition to the foods Dr. Oz and Dr Li discussed on the Dr Oz show Friday, September 10, 2010, some other good examples of cancer fighting, anti-angiogenesis foods.

Dr Oz said these 5 superfoods are scientifically proven to prevent cancer from growing. Learn how to eat them the right way.

Disturbing new research suggests that microscopic cancer, small cancer cells that can only been seen under a microscope, is widely prevalent. A recent study of women in their 40s indicated that 40% of them had microscopic breast cancer. Even more shocking, almost 100% of people in their 70s will have microscopic cancer in their thyroid glands.

Did you know that a microscopic tumor can grow up to 16,000 times its original size in as little as 2 weeks?

New groundbreaking research from The Angiogenesis Foundation proposes that you can stop cancer before it begins to grow. This new preventive approach is called anti-angiogenesis. Anti-angiogenesis encourages that, by changing the way you eat, you can change your “internal environment,” thereby depriving cancer cells the opportunity to grow and multiply.

1. Bok Choy – This type of Chinese cabbage contains brassinin; a powerful cancer-fighter, also found in broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Bok Choy should be eaten 3 times a week, in 1/2 cup servings to obtain its full benefits.

2. Cooked Tomatoes – have more cancer-fighting properties than raw tomatoes. Both contain the molecule lycopene, but heating the tomato changes its chemical structure and makes the benefits more readily available to your body. You should eat 2-3 (1/2 cup) servings of cooked tomatoes a week.

3. Flounder – This fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and low in mercury. Three 6-ounce servings a week is ideal.

4. Strawberries – The antioxidants in this berry help fight cancers. You should eat 1 cup a day, including the juice.

5. Artichokes contain 3 different cancer-fighting molecules. Enjoy ¼ cup of hearts per day.

Dr Oz What You Can Eat to Defeat Cancer

Dr Oz says that certain foods, eaten in the correct portions and frequency, can provide cancer-starving benefits. Below are Dr Oz’s foods to eat that can prevent cancer growth:

1. Green tea – Dunk Your Teabag. Dunking a tea bag up and down releases more cancer-fighting molecules than letting the bag just sit in the cup.

2. Strawberries
3. Soybeans – Fermented soy, like the kind used in miso soup, contains four times more cancer fighters than regular soybeans.
4. Chocolate

5. Cinnamon

Raw tomatoes are good, but cooking them in olive oil is better.

Chewing leafy greens helps to release enzymes that activate cancer-fighting molecules embedded deep in the leaves.

Broccoli sprouts can contain more cancer-fighting properties than regular broccoli.

Red Delicious and Granny Smith apples have twice as many cancer fighters as Fuji or Golden Delicious apples. The San Marzano tomato contains more cancer fighters than any other variety. Wine grapes grown in cooler climates have more cancer fighters than grapes grown in warmer climates.
We now know that all fruits and vegetables are not created equal – some are much more potent than others, based on their anti-angiogenesis profiles.

Dr oz says to choose one cancer fighting food for each meal. At 3 meals each day, that adds up to more than a thousand of cancer fighting food choices each year.

Eat to Defeat: A New Way to Fight Cancer
At the Angiogenesis Foundation, we are launching an ambitious new initiative, called Eat to Defeat Cancer, to help people take advantage of foods that fight cancer. Using published data and the Foundation’s own anti-angiogenesis food research, we are identifying and telling the world about the most potent cancer-fighting foods.

Our early research has already discovered that specific varieties of fruits, vegetables and teas are especially potent cancer fighters. The goal of Eat to Defeat Cancer is to arm consumers with this knowledge so they can make the best, most healthy food choices for themselves and their families.
