Dr Oz Sciatic Pain Symptoms
Today on Dr Oz he talked about chronic pain and it’s symptoms with one of them being back pain. Another type of chronic pain is called “peripheral neuropathy,” which is caused by a dysfunction in the nerves that travel from your head, face, torso, arms, and legs to your spinal cord. Irritation or damage to these nerves sends a confusing signal to the brain, which interprets the signal as pain. Sciatica is a common example of peripheral nerve pain. Dr Oz Sciatica Chronic Pain Symptoms
Sciatica usually results when the sciatic nerve gets pinched at the base of the spine. Because the sciatic nerve usually carries information from the leg, irritation to this nerve makes the brain believe there is a pain signal coming from the leg. This explains why sciatica sufferers often feel a shooting pain down the back of the leg.
Dr Oz Sciatica Pain (Sciatic Neuritis)
sciatic neuritis is a set of symptoms including pain that may be caused by general compression and/or irritation of one of five spinal nerve roots that give rise to each sciatic nerve, or by compression or irritation of the left or right or both sciatic nerves. The pain is felt in the lower back, buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot. In addition to pain, which is sometimes severe, there may be numbness, muscular weakness, pins and needles or tingling and difficulty in moving or controlling the leg. Typically, the symptoms are only felt on one side of the body.
Although sciatica is a relatively common form of low back pain and leg pain, the true meaning of the term is often misunderstood. Sciatica is a set of symptoms rather than a diagnosis for what is irritating the root of the nerve, causing the pain. This point is important, because treatment for sciatica or sciatic symptoms will often be different, depending upon the underlying cause of the symptoms.
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SPORTS MEDICINE:
Sciatic nerve pain can be caused by several factors including a herniated disk or piriformis syndrome. Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle (small, outer-hip muscle) becomes tight and puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. Some general exercises that may help sciatica include static stretching your hip flexors and piriformis and low-intensity strengthening exercises for your glutes (such as a floor bridge or ball bridge) and deep abdominal muscles (supine marching).
Symptoms Of Sciatica
One of the most common mistakes is to attribute groin pain to sciatica. This is actually rare. Sciatica, in general, is pain down the back of the leg and maybe into the foot and toes. Hip pain does not usually go beyond the knee. Sciatica involves a tingling or shooting pain and numbness, which might worsen if the patient coughs or sneezes. A doctor should be the one to tell the difference.
