1 pound of fresh wheatgrass is equal in nutritional value to nearly 25 pounds of the choicest vegetables.
Wheatgrass is freshly juiced or dried into powder for animal and human consumption. Both provide chlorophyll, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. Claims about wheatgrass’ health benefits of wheatgrass range from providing supplemental nutrition to having unique curative properties. Some consumers grow and juice wheatgrass in their homes. It is often available in juice bars, alone or in mixed fruit and/or vegetable drinks. It is also available in many health food stores as fresh produce, tablets, frozen juice and powder.
Wheatgrass Benefits
Benefits of drinking wheatgrass and the proponents of wheatgrass claim regular ingestion of the plant can:
improve the digestive system,
prevent cancer, diabetes and heart disease,
cure constipation,
detoxify heavy metals from the bloodstream,
help make menopause more manageable.
promote general well-being.
While none of these claims have been substantiated in the scientific literature, there is limited evidence in support of some of these claims.
Wheatgrass is high in oxygen like all green plants that contain chlorophyll, and your brain functions at an optimal level in a high-oxygen environment.
Wheatgrass Nutrition
Wheatgrass is a rich nutritional food that was popularized by Dr. Ann Wigmore, an educator and founder of the Hippocrates Health Institute in Boston. Wheatgrass contains a gret variety of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. According to Dr. Wigmore, 1 pound of fresh wheatgrass is equal in nutritional value to nearly 25 pounds of the choicest vegetables.
Dr. Wigmore reported that wheatgrass therapy, along with “living foods,” helped to eliminate cancerous growths and helped many other disorder, including mental health problems. The molecular structure of chlorophyll resembles that of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein of red blood cells, and this may be the reason for its effectiveness of wheatgrass, thus the benefits of wheatgrass!
The key difference between the two is that the metallic atom in the middle of each molecule of human hemoglobin is iron, while the metallic atom at the center of a molecule of chlorophyll is magnesium. In experiments on anemic animals, blood counts returned to normal after four to five days of receiving chlorophyll.

Wheatgrass Juice
For Juicing: Fresh wheat and barley grasses require a special juicer or attachment to extract their liquid. They have strong flavor, so mix with water or vegetable juice , not fruit juices. Whisk 1 tbsp (15mL) powdered wheat or barley grass with 1 to 2 cups (250 to 500 mL) vegetable juice or blended drinks.
Caution: Start with small amounts (no more than 2 tbsp/25 mL) wheatgrass juice daily. Large amounts may cause diarrhea and nausea.
The average dosage taken by consumers of wheatgrass is 3.5 grams (powder or tablets). Some also have a fresh-squeezed 30 ml wheatgrass shot once daily or for more therapeutic benefits a higher dose up to 2–4 oz taken 1-3 times per day on an empty stomach and before meals. Wheatgrass for detoxification, some users may increase their intake to 3–4 times per day. It should be noted that consumers with a poor diet may experience nausea on high dosages of wheatgrass. Outdoor wheatgrass is harvested for a few days each year from plants grown in the “bread basket” regions of the US and Canada. Winter wheat requires more than 200 days of slow growth in cold temperatures to reach the peak nutritional content. Even after that length of time, the plant is only 7 to 10 inches high.
